Siddharth Anand, renowned for directing recent blockbusters like War (2019) and Pathaan (2023), recently addressed the subdued box office performance of his latest venture, Fighter. Despite featuring Bollywood luminaries Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone, the film garnered a modest Rs 22.5 crore on its opening day. While witnessing a slight uptick over the Republic Day weekend, its earnings experienced a noticeable decline on the weekdays.
During a recent interview, Anand attributed the underwhelming response to Fighter to various factors. One such factor was the film's release on Thursday, January 25th, a weekday in India. Anand acknowledged that scheduling the release on a workday may have deterred audiences from opting for a mid-week movie outing.
Another contributing factor was the film's genre, an aerial action film, which remains relatively unexplored in Indian cinema. Anand conceded that the concept might have seemed "alien" to a substantial portion of the audience, unfamiliar with the thrills of aerial stunts and the world of fighter jets. Notably, he pointed out that a significant percentage of the Indian populace has never experienced commercial air travel, diminishing the relatability of the film's setting and action sequences.
Anand also recognized that, perhaps fueled by the remarkable success of Pathaan, both he and other filmmakers may have harbored "unrealistic expectations." He stressed the need to align expectations with the specific nature and genre of each film, acknowledging that Fighter's concept and release date might not guarantee the same level of success.
Despite Fighter's performance at the box office, Anand remains optimistic about its lasting impact. He referred to actor Anil Kapoor's assertion that the film will be remembered akin to Amitabh Bachchan's Deewar, which gained critical acclaim despite not achieving significant commercial success upon its release. Anand is confident that Fighter will be revered over time for its distinctive concept and execution.
As of now, Fighter continues its theatrical run, accumulating Rs 140.5 crore. The film also features Karan Singh Grover, Akshay Oberoi, and Sanjeeda Shaikh in prominent roles.
