A Cultural Shift in Parliament: New Traditions and Thin Attendance

India's Parliament witnessed a unique blend of history and light attendance on Wednesday as President Droupadi Murmu addressed the combined Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha in the new Parliament building.

Marking a significant departure from tradition, President Murmu's entry was accompanied by a newly instituted procession. Led by an official carrying the gold-plated 'Sengol', a symbol of Indian culture, the procession added a touch of ceremony to the occasion. The rhythmic drum rolls and the melodious sounds of the 'Hathroi' further enriched the experience. Notably, the Sengol remained with the President throughout her address and even on her exit, symbolizing the integration of cultural elements into Parliament's formal proceedings.

President Murmu's 75-minute speech covered a range of topics, evoking enthusiastic responses from the ruling alliance. Points like the passage of the women's reservation bill and the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya drew the loudest applause and cheers. The President's speech also resonated with literary references, incorporating quotes from former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Odia poet Utkalmani Gopalbandhu Das.

Despite the historic setting and the new tradition, attendance fell short of expectations, with many empty seats marring the occasion. While members of the ruling alliance actively engaged with the speech, the opposition largely remained silent, except for a few isolated remarks. Nevertheless, the presence of prominent leaders like Prime Minister Modi, Congress President Kharge, and BJP President Nadda added significance to the event.

Heightened security measures were in place, with the first row of viewing galleries removed following a recent incident. Diplomats from various countries also graced the occasion, lending an international dimension to the proceedings. Furthermore, BJP MP Nagendra Ray's traditional attire of the Rajabongshi community added a visual touch to the event, showcasing India's diverse cultural tapestry.
